About

The harpsichordist Roberto Loreggian was born in Padua in Italy and studied under Ton Koopman at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He has produced many successful recordings in recent years for the Italian label Tactus, as well as an acclaimed CD of the music of Pasquini for Chandos. Mario Folena studied the flute with the legendary Jeanne-Pierre Rampal, and has performed under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner, as well as many other leading artists of the day. On this hybrid SACD recording these two outstanding musicians present these beautiful works on authentic instruments.

Thanks to his contact with flute players like H. Freytag and J. G. Wuerdig, J. S. Bach had already discovered the potentials of this instrument in Koethen between 1717 and 1723, and during his visit to Dresden in 1717 he also had the opportunity to meet the two most prominent flute players, the French virtuoso Pierre Gabriel Buffardin and the personal flute teacher of Frederic II, Johann Joachim Quantz. The meeting between Bach and Quantz was a particular inspiration for many of the works that the composer went on to produce for the flute, including several of the sonatas presented here.
