About

Hans Werner Henze is one of this century's most active, interesting composers, but a piece he composed in 1970, El
Cimarrón
[runaway slave], counts as one of his major statements: rhetorical, intensely dramatic, but in no way conventional. This is the absolute reference performance of a late 20th century operatic classic, performed by the composer's favourite interpreter, Nicholas Isherwood, one of the leading singers of this specialist genre.

The score is described as a 'recital for four musicians.' They consist of the baritone who portrays El Cimarron himself, plus a guitarist, a flutist and a percussionist; all four musicians play considerable amounts of percussion.

This was one of the first scores to emerge from Henze after his loudly proclaimed conversion to radical left-wing politics. For all the gentle or not-so-gentle mockery he has had to endure, leading a luxurious life in Italy while professing solidarity with the oppressed masses, his political conviction seems to lend this tale of defiance against slavery a real energy.
