Bretz’s almost conversational delivery certainly avoids overt villainy, though it is clear enough from the increasing horror in Rinat Shaham’s voice that Bluebeard’s latest amour is not too pleased with her tour of the castle amenities.
Hungarian bass Gabor Bretz brings an impeccable nobility to Bluebeard, more ardent vigour that some of the most intimidating Dukes, while mezzo Rinat Shaham has an engaging curiosity and confidence as she goes exploring in the castle... Canellakis seems to have such sympathy for the intensity of Bartók’s orchestral writing at ever dynamic level, which is why this is my Record of the Week.
