Paul Wranitzky, Mozart’s masonic brother, was a favourite composer of the Viennese court for which he wrote exclusive compositions. Wranitzky was a characterful composer with a masterful sense of orchestration, but his sudden death in 1808 saw his legacy overshadowed by his contemporaries Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The composer’s mature Symphony in C major is a fine example of his abilities, and the finale of the Symphony in D major bursts into life in fine Janissary style, complete with triangle, cymbals and Turkish drum.

Vol.6 is on 8574454: ‘Marek Štilec conducts all of this facile music well, and the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice is in top form as is the recording’ (Fanfare).

Of Vol.4 on 8574290: ‘The Pardubice orchestra does a splendid job of this music. It is colourful, with good tempos, precise intonation, and an excellent balance of instruments. Conductor Štilec has an inherent knack for the style, and his delineation of the various movements allows for Wrantizky’s fine sense of scoring to emerge’ (Fanfare).

Marek Štilec and the Czech Chamber Philharmonic are prominent in the Naxos catalogue and they have recorded admired albums of the music of Leopold Koželuch, Franz Ignaz Beck and Zdeněk Fibich.
