About

Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano for mixed choir and guitar sets some of Federico García Lorca’s most evocative and intimate Andalusian poetry. Marked by dramatic contrasts the music fuses colouristic ideas with rich polyphonic writing – performed here in an accurate critical edition. Corrado Margutti’s Rivers, designed to accompany Romancero Gitano, is a kaleidoscope of forms, styles and images that pays homage to Castelnuovo-Tedesco as well as encoding hidden references to other musical luminaries, forming a musical journey through time and space.

ITER Research Ensemble, established in September 2022, is a unique vocal and research group comprised of young musicologists from the University of Pavia in Cremona. Driven by the mission to do research on the music they sing, and sing the music they do research on, ITER has collaborated with renowned institutions and performed with renowned artists like Andrea Lucchesini and Nicolò Spera. ITER has also premiered works by Luciano Berio and Corrado Margutti. This recording marks their debut, showcasing their dedication to research and performance. Giovanni Cestino is an ethnomusicologist and conductor. Co-founder and member of the ITER Research Ensemble, he serves as the music director and scientific coordinator of the group.

Nicolò Spera is one of the few guitarists to perform on both six-string and ten-string guitars. Spera’s creative focus centers on expanding the guitar repertoire. He has commissioned, performed, and recorded new works ranging from solos to programmes with choirs, small ensembles and orchestras. His discography includes the complete guitar works by Maurice Ohana and Christopher Theofanidis, as well as his own transcriptions of Bach’s Cello Suites.
