The bright, low-fat sound and keen attack remembered under Mackerras have changed little to judge from this new recording of two of Mendelssohn’s symphonies. ... The Symphony No 3, “Scottish”, gets a bracing performance from Emelyanychev, who obtains a leaner sound than one might imagine from the number of players listed in the album booklet. ... In the Symphony No 5, the “Reformation” (actually Mendelssohn’s second symphony, though not published until after his death), the vibrato-free strings lend religious purity and sheer urgency disguises where the music is busy rather than imaginative.
