About

When lockdown was imposed in 2020 many artists began streaming performances from their own homes. In response, pianist Francesco Piemontesi and director Jan Schmidt-Garre launched a concert series to showcase artists living in Berlin, given in the renowned Schinkel Pavillon with an expert technical team assembled at short notice. Fourteen concerts were held, without audiences, under the name Home Music Berlin featuring some of the world’s leading instrumentalists and singers. In addition, a documentary film captured rehearsals and private backstage scenes. This collection of performances is a testament to the resilience and solidarity of these artists during the pandemic.

Jan Schmidt-Garre studied directing with Rudolf Noelte, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and David Esrig and at the feature film department of Munich Film Academy. He graduated with a master’s degree in philosophy from the Jesuit University of Philosophy in Munich. He is general manager of PARS MEDIA and directed most of its films.

Pianist Francesco Piemontesi was largely responsible for starting the series of concerts. His recording with Maria Kliegel on 8572314 was praised by MusicWeb International: ‘young Francesco Piemontesi, also known for recordings of Robert Schumann, provides thoughtful…restrained accompaniment.’

Naxos artist and a laureate of numerous national and international competitions, Gabriel Schwabe is also featured in this production. His Brahms recording together with Tianwa Yang can be heared on 8573489: ‘Supported, again, by a precise and inspiring conductor, the two soloists join forces in a captivating dialogue. The consistency of the bows and the vibratos…as much as the balance between soloists and orchestra are a model of a kind. Superb’ (Diapason).
