About

4th Line Horn Quartet's first release is a cross-section of Nordic compositions for the horn quartet and the first release in Finland with art music composed for the horn quartet.

4th Line Horn Quartet was formed in 2016 by Finnish top female horn players. All players work in Finland's biggest orchestras. The quartet was inspired to compile a Nordic publication of quartet works by Daniel Kjellesvik's Fire Impulser, which is where the name of the publication comes from.

The publication opens with Johan Kvarndal's (1919–1999) Horn Quartet, op.73 (1988). The work was composed at the request of the Norwegian Horn Club. It has not been recorded before. The swirling themes circulate from player to player and the piece culminates in something like an improvisation for horn solo.

The album also includes Atso Almila's (b. 1953) Little Suite for four horns (1987). Especially the playfulness of the third part of the work and the beautifully flowing melody of the second part evoke joy and admiration. "I especially recognize TePaTePa's world of thought with its rhythmic plays and echo effects in this series as well", writes composer Atso Almila.

Fire Impulser for fire horn by Norwegian Daniel Weiseth Kjellesvik (b. 1985) is the composer's first composition. In the composer's own words, "At first there was only the last part, which I had been inspired by the movement of the swans' necks when they slowly raise their heads." The piece uses a wide sound range and the rich tonal range of the horn.

The compositions of the Norwegian clarinetist and composer Terje Bjørn Lerstad (b. 1955) will be heard in Recitativ og fanfare, op.130. The piece is a two-part miniature piece for four horns. In the handwritten sheet music, it is mentioned that the composition was written especially for female horn players. The composition has not been recorded before. The piece develops from a beautifully dreamy beginning to the contrast of the fanfare section.

The northern dimension also reaches Canada. Matthew Whittall's (b. 1975) Anthem II (2009) is a nuanced straightforward unison canon. The piece was composed to be performed at a festive award ceremony.
