About

Following their acclaimed recording of Handel’s Rodelinda (BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Month, Gramophone Editor’s Choice), The English Concert and Harry Bicket continue their Handel series with a superb soloist line-up including Sophie Bevan, Iestyn Davies, Ashley Riches, Hugo Hymas and Lucy Crowe. Starting with an unusual verbal altercation between an Angel and Lucifer, Handel’s La Resurrezione is an extraordinary retelling of the three days between Christ’s death and resurrection which is unlike any other Passion or Oratorio. This journey centres around women, Mary Magdalene and Mary Cleophas, in a way that seems very modern, and which mirrors the ambiguities of their feelings in music that is completely original in concept and orchestration. The journey from grief, through hope, to love is wonderfully depicted. The message seems to be that grief is the price we pay for love; and that should be part of the narrative of our lives, not the defining moment.

Cast:
- Mary Magdalene: Sophie Bevan (soprano)
- Angel: Lucy Crowe (soprano)
- Mary Cleophas: Iestyn Davies (countertenor)
- John the Evangelist: Hugo Hymas (tenor)
- Lucifer: Ashley Riches (bass)

Reviews

La Resurrezione is one of Handel’s greatest works, and Harry Bicket has gifted us its greatest recording. ... Bicket and his stellar cast embrace Handel’s radical approach, turning scared figures... into intensely dramatic ones. Handel gave the instruments their own actor-like parts, which The Englsih Concert deliver ravishningly. ... The artists also plunder Handel’s score, enriching us with a trove of their own ideas.  Berta Joncus (Recording of the Month)
BBC Music Magazine July 2022
Among a handful of previous recordings, the standout is the excitingly theatrical performance from Marc Minkowski. This new version, with an all-British cast directed by Harry Bicket, strikes me as at least its equal. ... Bicket’s cast, expert Handelians all, is self-recommending. ... forced to choose a single recording of Handel’s flamboyant Roman oratorio, I’d plump for this new version: for Crowe and Bevan, for the consistently superlative instrumental playing and for the idiomatic rightness of Bicket’s direction.  Richard Wigmore (Recording of the Month)
