Astor PiazzollaAbout
The Argentine bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) revolutionized the tango. His tango nuevo, with its jazz and classical influences, made him a controversial figure in his own country, as his revolution clashed with tradition.
The release coincides with Piazzolla’s 100th birthday on 11 March 2021.
Influenced and admired by the greatest artists of his era such as Arthur Rubinstein, Alberto Ginastera, Jorge Luis Borges, Dizzy Gillespie, Jeanne Moreau, Piazzolla succeeded in taking the tango to new levels. Today international musicians like Chick Corea, Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, Mick Jagger and Caetano Veloso all play and love his music.
The documentary has access to extraordinary unpublished material: the voice of Astor Piazzolla recounting his memories and adventures, recorded by his own daughter, Diana.
Bonus: Never released rehearsal footage of Piazzolla
“I have to tell the whole truth. I can tell the story of angels, but that wouldn't be the true story. My story is a mix of the devil and angels with a bit of meanness. You have to have a bit of everything to progress in life.” – Astor Piazzolla
“Accompanied by the soulful playing of the bandoneon, director Daniel Rosenfeld brings a piece of musical history to life.” – Kino-Zeit.de ★★★★
