About

Bent Sørensen’s (b. 1958) distinctive music thrives on the intangible, from atmospheres and feelings to memories and dreams. This recording assembles three recent concertos from the Grawemeyer Award-winning composer performed by distinguished Nordic soloists, beginning with a second piano concerto played by its dedicatee and inspiration, Leif Ove Andsnes. Sørensen’s clarinet concerto for Martin Fröst is inspired by the scents of Spanish poetry, while his Trumpet Concerto for Tine Thing Helseth feeds off his constant obsession with the beauty and vulnerability of Venice. Each is highly evocative and filled with Sørensen’s own etched beauty.

On this recording three of the most renowned and acclaimed musicians in the world are soloists in three concertos by one of the most frequently played living Danish composers, Bent Sørensen.

La Mattina and the Trumpet Concerto were recorded by the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra in relation to their celebration of Sørensen’s 60th birthday at the Ultima Festival in 2018.

Serenidad was recorded by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra at the Sonning Prize concert in 2014, when soloist Martin Fröst was awarded the prestigious prize.

Each of the three concertos constitutes a single musical organism, with the soloist as the gleaming focal point and with the rest of the orchestra as an echoing space that expands and frames the distinctive mood and power that radiates from the solo player.

All works on this album are world premiere recordings.
