About

The Viennese violin virtuoso Joseph Mayseder (1789-1863) is today considered an insider tip, he played under the baton of Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert and wrote an impressive number of own compositions. More than 900 printed editions of his works in European countries and abroad illustrate the popularity of Mayseder, which nonetheless seemed to vanish over the course of time. His works are now continually being published as world premiere recordings by violinist Raimund Lissy, member of the Vienna Philharmonic. The sixth edition of this series with Gramola featuring Mayseder’s oeuvre includes the Piano Trios no. 1 in B flat major, op.34 and no.2 in A flat major, op.52, as well as the Sonata for Violin and Piano no.2 in E minor. The musicians Srebra Gelleva (piano), Maria Grün (cello) and Raimund Lissy splendidly succeed in merging these works’ high virtuosity with the typical Biedermeier Viennese charme.

Raimund Lissy was born in Vienna in 1966 and received his first violin lessons at the age of four. He went on to study with Thomas Kakuska at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (then the Wiener Musikhochschule) as well as with Alfred Staar. After working as an orchestral musician in the Arena di Verona, he joined the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera in 1988. In 1991 he became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic. That same year, he became first chair of the second violins; since 1993 he has been principal of the second violins for the Vienna Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Raimund Lissy has also been active in the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle since 2013.

As second violinist in the Ensemble Wien, Raimund Lissy is also intensively dedicated to chamber music. With this string quartet formation, since 1994 he has performed in the subscription cycle Freude an Musik (Joy in Music) for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society for the Friends of Music) five times a year in the Brahms-Saal of the Vienna Musikverein.
