About

Nancy Dalberg (1881-1949) completed three string quartets, and they hold a place of their own among her compositions. No.1 in D minor was the very first instrumental work that she presented at a public concert (1915). No.2 in G minor, op.14 (1922), was the first work that was published and played outside Denmark, while No.3, op.20 (1927), which is dedicated to her teacher, Carl Nielsen, was not published during her lifetime. The present release of the three quartets features two world premiere recordings.

Nancy Dalberg is considered one of the first female composers in Denmark, and she was the first woman in Denmark to compose a symphony (C minor, 1917).

Dalberg studied with some of the most important composers of the time: Fini Henriques and Carl Nielsen, and her first string quartet was even premiered by Nielsen as a violinist.

Her three string quartets were written 100 years ago, and only the second has been recorded earlier. Thus this release features two world premiere recordings recordings.

With this release a new light is shed on one of the female composers of Danish history, that due to her time of living never got the acknowledgement she deserved. In a certain sense one can even so say that we are being presented here with an early, a mature and a late quartet.

Nordic String Quartet:
- Hei∂run Petersen (violin)
- Mads Haugsted Hansen (violin)
- Daniel Eklund (viola)
- Lea Emilie Brøndal (cello)
