About

The subject matter of Grigori Frid’s opera The Diary of Anne Frank (1968/69) guaranteed its profile beyond the borders of Russia. The rest of the composer’s enormous output - mainly instrumental works, songs and radio and film music - still remains to be discovered and explored. Both before and after the collapse of the communist USSR, Frid was awarded the highest honours, such as the title of Artist of Merit (1986) and the Moscow Prize (1996).

Frid’s aesthetic reflects an affinity with Dmitri Shostakovich alongside the world of his contemporaries, a generation younger, such as Edison Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke. As with these three composers, Frid’s music reflects both an adherence to the great Russian tradition and a quest for new expressive possibilities in keeping with international trends.
