About

For the turn of the millennium, the Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh commissioned a new window from the artist Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, challenging him to create ‘something visionary’.

Taking inspiration from Paolozzi’s impassioned contemplation of Christ’s Ascension and its meaning in our time, Matthew Owens and the Cathedral’s Choir crafted an Ascensiontide Evensong of contemporary music, much of it associated with St Mary’s.

Premiere recordings of pieces by Sir James MacMillan and Richard Allain lead up to another visionary masterpiece, Messiaen’s radiant and meditative organ work L’Ascension.

‘the choir sing with tremendous fervour, clarity and power’ - Gramophone Magazine
