About

It was in 1774 that Joseph Haydn had his first set of solo keyboard sonatas published and that Mozart first tackled the genre.

The five sonatas presented here all date from 1773-1783, a decade that saw the fortepiano swiftly become the preferred medium for a new style of keyboard writing, to the detriment of the harpsichord.

All that remained was to find the instrument to speak this new language. The late-eighteenth-century German piano on which Jérôme Hantaï performs offers us a chance to hear a unique, expressive, cantabile voice.

Reviews

... some may wonder why we have had to wait so long for more of [Jérôme] Hantaï’s lucid, imaginative fortepiano-playing. ... From the first bars of Mozart’s F major Sonata, K332, it is clear that Hantaï inhabits every square inch of this musical edifice lovingly and with delight, his expressive gestures informed by the most progressive contemporary thinking about late 18th-century Viennese style. ... The wealth and variety of brilliant textures that pervade [Haydn’s] E flat Sonata are temporarily suspended by the heart-stopping tragic poise of its Adagio. This is Haydn-playing on an exalted artistic level. ... this is surely among the most satisfying discs I’ve encountered this year. Please, don’t miss it!  Patrick Rucker
