About

The Anglo Mexican Foundation celebrates its 75th anniversary with this programme of three of its recent commissions - from Mexican composers Alejandro Basulto and Arturo Márquez – joining the first recording of Arturo Márquez’s harp concerto Máscaras, in an album that interleaves nocturnal warmth with an infectious spirit of dancing energy.

Alejandro Basulto, born in 1984 on the Yucatan Peninsula, started his music education as a classical guitarist but gradually discovered my true love in composing. His music is deeply rooted in his Latin American upbringing, in the current world and in his love for both concert and popular music. First and foremost, I consider myself a storyteller whose mission is to write music that is exciting, engaging and relevant for concert goers and musicians alike.

Arturo Márquez, born in Alamos, Mexico, in December 1950, has achieved world-fame with his orchestral Danzón no.2. He works at the National University of Mexico, Superior School of Music. and the National Centre of Research, Documentation and Information of Mexican Music. He and his family live in Mexico City.

Born in Mexico City in 1979, Morgan Szymanski is much and demand as a teacher and has given master-classes at top conservatoires worldwide.

Born in Glasgow, Jamie MacDougall has enjoyed a distinguished career in concert and on stage, and has been ‘Scotland’s Voice’ for classical music on BBC Radio Scotland; he can also often be heard presenting on BBC Radio 3.

Gabriella Dall’Olio, harp, has inspired audiences throughout Europe and the Middle East with her solo recitals and chamber-music concerts for the past two decades. She has also enjoyed working also in the pop world, appearing with Tina Turner, Sting, Phil Collins, UK champion beatboxer FaithSFX, Kazabian, Elton John and the Petshopboys.

The activities of David Curtis have encompassed chamber music, teaching and orchestral conducting around the globe. Following a successful career with the Coull String Quartet, he founded the Orchestra of the Swan (OOTS), one of the UK’s most successful chamber orchestras and, as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for 21 years. He founded the Shakespeare Sinfonia, to make this recording, the ensemble drawing together a select group of some of the finest freelance players and highly talented post-graduate students from leading London music conservatoires.
