About

“Cavatine”, the debut album of cellist Cameron Crozman and pianist Philip Chiu, explores the refined world of French music in the first half of the 20th century. Framed by the great Sonatas of Debussy and Poulenc, the programme includes lesser-known works by Messiaen, Koechlin, and Françaix. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the multitude of styles — from the impressionist to the surrealist — that defined the era.

On this album, Cameron plays the ca. 1696 “Bonjour” Stradivarius cello and the ca. 1830 “Shaw” Adam cello bow, both generously on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts’ Musical Instrument Bank.

Described as a “mature artist with a profound musical imagination” (Toronto Concert Reviews), Cameron Crozman is being hailed as one of Canada’s leading young cellists. Maintaining an active performance schedule in North America and Europe, engagements have taken Cameron to such prestigious venues as the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Berliner Philharmonie, Paris Philharmonie, Philadelphia’s Mann Centre, Montreal’s Maison Symphonique, and Canada’s National Arts Centre. An avid collaborator, he has shared the stage with leading artists Andre Laplante, Huw Watkins, Martin Beaver, Geard Causse and James Campbell among others, and worked with composers Kaija Saariaho, Peeris Vasks, and Kelly-Marie Murphy.

Lauded as “...a pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colors” (La Presse), Philip Chiu is acclaimed for his brilliant and sensitive playing, as well as his particular ability to connect with audiences on and off stage. Inaugural winner of the Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer, he is more than a summation of technical and musical abilities and has become one of Canada’s leading musicians.
