About

The Association for Private Musical Performances (Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen) was founded in November 1918 by Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) and several of his close associates. Its formation represented perhaps the most progressive and intensive of opportunities for this select Viennese musical circle: they were able to familiarise themselves with the latest contemporary works by international composers in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, a period sorely lacking in cultural optimism and innovation.

Schoenberg enjoyed the acquaintance of many of the composers whose works were performed at the association's concerts, with some counting as close friends, as in the case of Zemlinsky. The association served to foster the entire modern music scene, from Richard Strauss and Debussy to Webern, as far as the works' instrumentation allowed.
