‘Inspiration’ reflects Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s own inspirations and influences, featuring a broad range of music from Bob Marley and Jacqueline du Pré to Shostakovich, including some of Sheku’s own arrangements.

The album includes Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1, the concerto Sheku performed in the BBC Young Musician final.

With Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the CBSO – live recordings in Birmingham and Nottingham.

Sheku, 18 years old, came into the spotlight when he won BBC Young Musician award 2016, playing Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto in the final. He was the first black winner of this prestigious award. Previous winners include Nicola Benedetti.

Sheku is Nottingham-born, and very proud of his hometown. In September 2017 he donated Ł3,000 of his own money to his local school to fund the music programme.

He’s one of seven children, all of whom play a musical instrument. He first came to public attention when they appeared on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

[Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s] debut disc, Inspiration (Decca), skilfully combines a blistering live performance of Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto with a range of alluring miniatures. ... As virtuoso he hits the heights in the cadenza to the Shostakovich concerto, supported by the terrific City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (superb horn solos) under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.  Nocholas Kenyon
