About

A tribute to the art of the outstanding conductor, Alberto Zedda. Considered by many to be one of the greatest modern Rossini experts, Zedda passed away in March 2017. The recording boasts a remarkable line-up of singers for this performance, including Serena Farnocchia, Anna Bonitatibus, Ismael Jordi and Alex Esposito.

Begun in 1831 and completed only at the end of 1841, Rossini’s Stabat Mater premièred in Paris at the Théâtre Italien on 7 January 1842. It was performed by some of the finest soloists of the day: Giulia Grisi, Emma Albertazzi, Mario de Candia and Antonio Tamburini. It has always been the composer’s best-known and most popular sacred work. The power of its dramatic contrasts and beautiful melodies has established it as one of the masterpieces of Italian 19th-century sacred music, worthy of a place beside Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem.

It is difficult to talk of Alberto Zedda in the past tense. Zedda was a person of such enthusiasm that it immediately affected all those who came into contact with him. In addition to being an excellent conductor, he was an avid organiser of cultural events, a highly efficient manager who was full of ideas, and who placed his extensive and deep knowledge entirely at the service of music. Alberto Zedda made live recordings for Dynamic of Rossini’s Otello, Semiramide and Armida.
