About

This remarkable chamber opera, set to a libretto by Jorge Volpi, was written by four composers – two Mexican and two from the United States: Hebert Vásquez, Arlene Sierra, Lei Liang and Hilda Paredes.

Legend has it that, since pre-Hispanic times, the inhabitants of Tenancingo, have devoted themselves – as other villages have to ceramics or pottery – to a singular profession: prostitution. In 2001 the criminal network of the Salazar Juárez brothers was discovered. For years the brothers had been forcing young Mexican women into prostitution in Tijuana and in the “fields of love” near the strawberry farms of San Ysidro, California.

Librettist Volpi writes that "the stories told in the opera help us to hear and see precisely what we prefer to ignore and pass over in silence."
