About

The lasting and exclusive relationship between Maurizio Pollini and Deutsche Grammophon began in 1971, eleven years after the pianist’s victory in the 1960 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw at the age of eighteen. With the exception of the Chopin works he set down immediately thereafter, Pollini’s entire recording career has been with DG. During the course of this amazing collaboration, Pollini has produced an abundance of albums which continue to be viewed as benchmarks – from Bach, Schumann and Schubert to Chopin and the modernists, and his beloved Beethoven sonatas (in 2014, Pollini completed the first DG Beethoven cycle since Barenboim’s in the early 80s), and great concerto recordings with Abbado, Böhm, Jochum and Thielemann.

Celebrating his 75th birthday in 2017, this luxurious 55-CD set presents Pollini’s complete recordings on Deutsche Grammophon with their original covers, including the first ever release of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Maxim Shostakovich (recorded in Tokyo in 1974). Also included are 3 bonus DVDs: great concerto recordings with Böhm and Abbado as well as Bruno Monsaingeon’s acclaimed documentary film De main de maître (2015). This set is accompanied by a 200-page booklet featuring new liner notes by the longtime Pollini companion Paolo Petazzi, an extensive additional text by Pollini’s foremost producer for DG, Christopher Alder and numerous rare photographs.

“The Italian arch-aristocrat of the piano ... he uses his palette of stainless-steel shades to convey unshakeable faith in the music’s muscles, sinews and skeleton ... I could have listened to him all night.”  The Independent

“[Pollini’s] poetic inclinations just happen to be happily wed to a technique second to none in the piano world, and his astounding recordings have easily held up...” - Audiophile Audition (Pollini & Abbado: Complete DG Recordings)

“In an interview marked by a deep empathy with the great pianist , Bruno Monsaingeon draws a portrait of an infinitely gifted musician but remained modest and friendly; the illustrations from concerts and rehearsals captured in his brilliant career scroll the biggest names in the late twentieth century. A beautiful and moving album... Stunning excerpts from concerts and rehearsals show the young soloist and in concert or rehearsal with great leaders he touched , severe Boehm, the warmest Boulez, the closeness with Abbado. A beautiful portrait.” - ResMusica, Paris (Maurizio Pollini: De main de maître)

“... fearsomely implacable playing ...” - The Guardian (Beethoven Piano Sonatas op.31 & op.49)
