About

This recording is the seventh by Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony available on the DSO Live label. Mahler 3 was recorded live in concert May 21-23, 2015, in the Eugene McDermott Concert Hall in Dallas. Van Zweden and the DSO were joined by mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, the Women of the Dallas Symphony Chorus and the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas.

Of the performance, Scott Cantrell of Dallas Morning News said, “Jaap van Zweden commanded the piece both intellectually and viscerally, and the orchestra played stunningly… The finale was sheer magic.” Mike Greenberg of Classical Voice North America wrote, “Van Zweden proved to be a Mahlerian of the first water.”

Reviews

This live recording is of extra interest given that its Dutch conductor was recently appointed next music director of the New York Philharmonic. For me, the appeal of Jaap van Zweden is his lack of pomp or histrionics, his no-nonsense rigour, his steady hand. Yet while his control is impressive, this isn’t the most exciting Mahler 3. He plots a clean path through the sprawling first movement and makes the climax an unambiguous joy. As a violinist (once youngest-ever leader of the Concertgebouw), he knows how to strip away clutter and let players do their thing: listen to the simple but still-fluid wind and brass solos.  Kate Molleson
