About

American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world’s leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan, Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On the Waterfront, and his own Mass.

This release features Leonard Bernstein’s complete iconic LP (Columbia MS 6091) presenting his versions of George Gershwin’s 'Rhapsody in Blue' (on which he both conducts and plays the piano) and 'An American in Paris'.

As a bonus, we have added another LP in its entirety (Columbia MS 6251), featuring Bernstein conducting his own orchestral suites West Side Story and On the Waterfront.

To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.” - Leonard Bernstein
