ArtistsJan Michiels (piano)
Quote from Jan Michiels in the preface to this recording: "And I can detect in Robert's music the pianistic virtuosity of a Liszt or Ravel piece, the refined sounds of Debussy, Stravinsky's rhythmical adventurousness, Lutoslawski's virtuosic moulding of musical form, Goeyvaert's 'rediscovered' tonality, and much more. But above all, I admire his masterful skill in distilling from all these influences a language that leaves a unique, incommutable impression on the listener and the performer."
One may wonder how Robert Groslot, who started his career as a pianist and a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for piano long before turning to conducting and composing, experienced the birth of his oeuvre for piano. "Strangely enough, these works were written after I was no longer active as a concert pianist. It seems that this withdrawal was imperative for me to develop an original pianist sound in my own compositions." As for the concerto he says: "I think this concerto reveals an individual voice that is quite specific to my style, and has musical colours that stamp it as being unmistakeably a work by me."
