Schubert’s last great chamber work, his String Quartet in C of 1828, remained unperformed and unpublished for at least 20 years after his death. It is now regarded as one of the pinnacles of chamber music, and seen by performers as one of the great challenges to their artistry.

It is by no means as dark a work as the G major Quartet, or 'Winterreise', and much of the writing shows the composer in a lighter mood, successfully combining weight, profundity and melodic charm with breath-taking technical assurance.
