New release in the Europakonzert Blu-ray Disc series. The Europakonzert annually celebrates the founding of the Berlin Philharmonic on 1st May 1882.

Recorded at the Staatstheater Meiningen, in the middle of Germany, 5 years after the German Reunion. The city has remained a musical centre since Hans von Bülow went from the Meininger Hoforchester to Berlin, to be the first conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

The evening began with the majestic Fifth piano concerto in E flat major by Beethoven in a delicately magical, virtuoso performance by Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim, followed Symphony No.2 in D major Op.73 by Brahms, who had also worked with the Meininger Orchestra.
