About

Conductor Vladimir Jurowski elicits here an efferverscent, enthralling and elegant performance of one of Rossini’s great operas, La Cenerentola.

Rossini operas, and La Cenerentola in particular, are Glyndebourne favourites, having been introduced by Italian conductor Vittorio Gui in the early 1950s. Gui introduced no less than four Rossini operas during his tenure as Glyndebourne’s Music Director.

La Cenerentola is in 2 acts and is based on the fairy tale Cendrillon (Cinderella) by Charles Perrault. Composed over a period of 3 weeks when Rossini was in his mid-20s, it follows the early success the composer had with his opera Barber of Seville.

In this recording, Glyndebourne’s Music Director Vladimir Jurowski leads an extremely well integrated cast. Romanian soprano Ruxandra Donose is spectacular with her flawless timbre, expressive vocalism and thoughtful musicianship all on display here. Leading Rossini tenor Maxim Mironov is equal to the task in his portrayal of Don Ramiro, his voice sweet-toned and flexible.

Cast:
- Cenerentola: Ruxandra Donose (mezzo-soprano)
- Don Ramiro: Maxim Mironov (tenor)
- Don Magnifico: Alessandro Corbelli (baritone)
- Clorinda: Raquela Sheeran (soprano)
- Tisbe: Lucia Cirillo (mezzo-soprano)
- Alidoro: Umberto Chiummo (bass-baritone)
- Dandini: Pietro Spagnoli (baritone)

What the Press said:
Donose and Mironov are both spectacular, while Corbelli makes Magnifico frightening and repellent.’ - The Guardian, June 2007

‘…this is the first time a Rossini opera has been performed by period instruments in a UK theatre – and the razor-sharp conducting of Vladimir Jurowski certainly made the most of the opportunity.’ - Financial Times, June 2007

‘…this was Glyndebourne at its vibrant best.’ - Evening Standard, June 2007

The sparkling-voiced Romanian soprano Ruxandra Donose (Cenerentola) and the suitably refined Russian tenor Maxim Mironov (her Prince) lead a well integrated cast, and conductor Vladimir Jurowski and the period instruments of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment find all the quicksilver elegance in this glorious score.’ - Daily Mail, June 2007
