About

The Italian composer and musicologist Giovanni Tebaldini was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was particularly known his sacred music, and this new 2-CD set from Tactus of world premiere recordings features his complete works for organ, as well as some of his choral music. The organist is Giulio Marcati, and the Coro Costanzo Porta is directed by Antionio Greco.

Giovanni Tebaldini was born in Brescia in Italy in 1864, and died in San Benedetto del Tronto in 1952. After initially devoting himself to secular music, Tebaldini went on to compose a considerable amount of sacred music, becoming one of the greatest exponents of the Caecilian movement.

He studied at the Conservatory of Milan (1883-1886) as a pupil of Ponchielli, and became organist at the Cathedral of Piazza Armerina in 1887. He directed the Cappella Marciana in Venice between 1889 and 1894 and the Choir of the Basilica del Santo in Padua from then until 1897. He also taught at the Conservatory “San Pietro a Majella” of Naples from 1925 until 1930.

His work in the area of sacred Sacred Music includes transcriptions and reductions of about 130 scores of old masters. He was also the author of many important publications such as “The music archive of Anthony Chapel in Padua” (1895) and “Treaty of composition” by Peter Piel (translated from German).
