A vivacious blond with freckles, she began as a tomboy (Calamity Jane) before being given a clean-living, girl-next-door image as America's perpetual virgin in sophisticated sex comedies. Oscar Levant famously quipped: “I knew her before she was a virgin”.

Doris Day's clear, intriguing singing voice brought her extraordinary success. No fewer than 36 chart hits – seven of them million-sellers – are included in Retrospective’s compilation of the very best from her heyday.
