First Night fuses the stately grandeur of Gosford Park with the magical music of Amadeus for a unique story of love’s fluctuating fortunes, set against a sumptuous backdrop of visual and vocal beauty. Life imitates art in this frisky romantic charmer which was shot amidst the awe-inspiring beauty of Manderston House in Duns. Wealthy industrialist Adam (Richard E Grant) has always dreamt of playing Don Alfonso in a production of Mozart’s comic opera Cosi Fan Tutte. He makes the dream a reality by inviting a cast of talented amateurs to stage a production at his stately abode under the direction of the long-suffering Celia (Sarah Brightman).

The opera’s themes of love, jealousy and mistaken identity are repeated in real life as love is in the air and relationships are forged and tested to the limit. An effortlessly entertaining romp with some stunning singing from Alfie Boe, Sarah Brightman and Juliette Pochin.

The music featured in the film is a mixture of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and some more modern songs which appear towards the end of the soundtrack (Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps, Hold My Hand and Lovebug). Mozart’s music is not limited to the excerpts of Cosi fan Tutti, the opera being performed in the film, but rather is taken from a wide range of sources and genres.  Opera arias and Overtures, String Quintets, Horn and Piano Concertos, Symphonies, Motets and Serenades are all on show and create a diverse but cohesive track list which reads like a ‘Mozart Greatest Hits’ compilation.

The voices of Alfie Boe, Sarah Brightman and Juliette Pochin are featured, as well as members of the cast and the Scottish National Opera.
