About

When the young Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo was appointed Chief Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in succession to Sir Simon Rattle in 1998 he was not a well known figure either internationally or, particularly, in the UK. And given the heights to which Rattle had taken the orchestra — not only artistically, but also in terms of its wider profile — his would inevitably be a hard act to follow.

But Oramo, who had impressed the Birmingham players hugely on previous encounters, rose to the challenge and continued as he began, with a quiet, unassuming determination combined with a searching musicianship that entirely vindicated the faith placed in him.

When he left Birmingham in 2008 to replace Alan Gilbert at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, it was with a solid record of achievement behind him — much of it, fortunately, preserved on disc.
