About

The fabled 1956 Met Opera Broadcast (sung in English).

Returning to the Met after an absence of fourteen years, Bruno Walter worked his Flute cast hard, even asking some of them up to his apartment to fine-tune passages not perfected in the allotted rehearsal time. But they all felt it was a privilege to be associated with Walter.

He was “very calming”, Roberta Peters the Queen of the Night remembered. Herome Hines the Sarastro thought he was the most painstaking maestro he’d worked with. And Theodor Uppman, the Papageno, would swear in court that the facial expressions coming from the dark-jacketed man on the podium were the perfect guide through the challenges of Mozart’s transparent score.
