About

The great Russian conductor Gennady Rozhdesstvensky (1931 - ) has appeared on BBC Legends in a number of major recordings with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and with the BBC Symphony Orchestra where he was Music Director from 1978 – 1981.

There appear to be no current recordings available by Rozhdestvensky of the works represented on this CD, though it is possible that he recorded them for the Russian label Melodiya, most of whose recordings are no longer available. The three works featured on this disc make up a miniature tour of Russian music from nationalism (the Rimsky-Korsakov), via high Romanticism (the Rachmaninov) to what might be called state-ordered modernism (the Prokofiev ‘Ode to the End of the War’).

The Rachmaninov Symphony No. 1 brings out the very best of Rozhdestvensky with it’s big romantic melodies and white heat drama, and as a result brings the 1979 Proms audience to its feet! The ProkofievOde to the End of the War’ is a rarity, and is hardly every performed because it requires 8 harps, 4 pianos, wind, percussion and double basses! Both beautifully recorded in stereo by the BBC in the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Halls respectively.

Recorded: Royal Albert Hall, 31 August 1979 (Rimsky-Korsakov); 23 August 1979 (Rachmaninov), Royal Festival Hall; 11 October 1978 (Prokofiev).
