About

This Gennadi Rozhdestvensky release is very important because it features the first performances in the West of Shostokovich's Symphony No.4 and his Suite Katerina Ismailova. The concert was attended by the composer.

The performances were given in 1962 in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh when Lord Harewood was artistic director of the festival and the featured composer was Shostakovich. The Times wrote at the time, "it is a work of genius, the sheer richness and diversity of material is literally fantastic". The Times continued, "it is hard to imagine a more brilliant account of this exceedingly taxing programme than Mr Gennadi Rozhdestvensky drew from the Philharmonia Orchestra tonight as it is to imagine a more persuasive one."

There is short fill-up of Shostakovich's popular Festive Overture, stunningly played by the London Symphony Orchestra from the Barbican in July 1985.
