About

Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969), conductor and composer, was born in Bucharest and became conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic (1945-1955).  He made his acclaimed debut with the London Philharmonic in January 1957 and in 1958 left Romania for Paris, never to return.  In 1961, when his health was beginning to deteriorate, he became chief conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra which he single handily built into an international orchestra of the highest standard. His death in 1969 cut short a new recording contract with EMI so these broadcasts hopefully preserve the qualities of this great orchestral builder and conductor.

This "live" 2CD set adds important new recordings to the discography of Silvestri and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. None of these titles, except Debussy's La Mer, were recorded in the studio commercially. The La Mer in this recording is far superior sonically than the Paris Conservatoire version.

This disc provides the chance to hear Silvestri in more English music - Walton's Partita (on a level with Szell in his famous version) and Delius's Paris.

A superb sounding Rachmaninov's Symphony No.3, an exciting Beethoven Symphony No.8 and a dashing Don Juan together with a wonderfully musical account of Handel's Fireworks Music, are totally new to the Silvestri discography.
