About

Gennadi Rozhdestvensky was the youngest ever principal conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (1964-1970) and therefore this release is especially welcome because it shows Rozhdestvensky as the consummate conductor of ballet featuring two major composers linked to the great Russian tradition - Tchaikovsky and late Stravinsky.

The disc also features Shostakovich, whose rare excursions into ballet produced The Bolt, a "mock" parody of European bourgeois decadence and Soviet physical culture.

Both the Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich formed part of a highly successful Proms concert in 1987 recorded digitally with Rozhdestvensky's own BBC Symphony Orchestra, of which he was music director from 1978 to 1982.

Rozhdestvensky's complete recording of Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" with the BBCSO (BBCL 4091-2) has been a consistent seller on BBC Legends.
