About

Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) took over from Toscanini as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic (1937-1943) and became Director of the Hallé from 1943 until his death. During this time he was also Principal Conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra (1961-1967) and was a frequent guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1961 onwards.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5, recorded in 1963, is a rarity and a "must" for Barbirolli fans. It is completely new to the Barbirolli discography and has been released to coincide with the Shostakovich Anniversary this year. It has been sourced from the Barbirolli Society and represents a really exciting performance in repertoire not usually associated with this conductor.

Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 was commercially recorded by EMI as far back as 1947 (and has long been unavailable) so this live version in excellent sound from 1966 is far superior. It has been sourced from the Barbirolli Society.

This Beethoven and Shostakovich CD is a follow up to another Barbirolli rarity, Bruckner's Symphony No.7 (BBCL41862).
