About

Three of the pieces featured on the disc were commissioned by and written especially for the Norwegian Chamber Orchesta. These works, “Form” by Magne Hegdal, “Serenata per Archi” by Ketil Hvoslef, and “Corelli Machine” by Terje Thommessen, are here receiving their premiere recordings. The CD also includes a piece entitled “Aurora” by one of the 20th century’s most important and innovative musical figures, Iannis Xenakis.

The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra has been lead by Terje Tønnessen since its inception in 1977. Between 1981 and 2001 Iona Brown joined the set-up as artistic leader and together they brought the orchestra continuity and great artistic growth.

The title track on this CD is Thommessen’s fascinating Corelli Machine. Thommessen’s enthusiasm for Corelli as an innovator, indeed as the creator of the concerto grosso form, is typically infectious and exuberant. The Italian master is present throughout the course of Thommessen’s machine. He meditates over Corelli’s material, “enlarging and expanding,” in the composer’s own words.

The music of Magne Hegdal’s Form” has a strong element of retrospection: shadows from the past, memories – both on a personal and historical level. To some degree the music has been formed by the composer, but according to Hegdal himself much of it has found its form gradually as the material has evolved. A serenade is frequently associated with an element of ceremony, however the piece by Ketil Hvoslef presented here is from a very different world. The music is unobtrusive, soft and warm, captivating the listener through restrained energy, and saving any major outbursts for where they seem musically inevitable.

Like many of Iannis Xenakis’ works, the title “Aurora” comes from ancient Greek. It represents a measure of land in the ancient system of lengths and weights, corresponding to approximately 2700 square meters, or “the ground covered by a yoke of ploughing oxen in one day.” The work should therefore be experienced as a vast musical landscape.
