About

In the wake of worldwide commemorations of the 90th anniversary of the great conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth, Sony Masterworks has completely remixed and remastered the definitive recordings of the complete Mahler Symphony cycle that Bernstein made with the New York Philharmonic during the 1960s.

This 12-disc Special Edition has been remastered for the first time using the original analogue tapes from the recording sessions, and is presented in attractive glossy packaging with an extensive booklet containing sleeve notes, an essay by Bernstein on Mahler and his works, and many photos of the conductor on the podium, both in concert and in the studio. There is also a technical note from the producer explaining the remastering process.

The set also includes the recording Bernstein made with Christa Ludwig and René Kollo of Das Lied von der Erde.

Included as a special bonus and appearing on CD for the first time is a long-unavailable 1967 audio documentary entitled Gustav Mahler Remembered: Reminiscences by Mahler’s associates and by musicians who played under his baton, narrated by William Malloch.
