About

Alexandre Pierre Boëly was a french conductor whose music was distincly Classical. As the Romantic movement swept through Europe during the 19th century, Boëly was left behind due to his Classical sensibilities and reluctance to move away from writing what he deemed ‘serious music’.

Although Boëly is a relatively unknown composer, this does not diminish the part he played in the flourishing development of French music during the 19th century. He left behind an impressive oeuvre which numbers about 300 individual works, especially in the genres of chamber music and instrumental pieces for piano or organ.

This disc features his Sonatas in C minor and G major, the former played on an erard-flügel (grand piano) and the latter on an erard-tafelklavier (table piano).

Phoenix Edition is delighted to present a disc of rare jewels, elegantly played by Christine Schornsheim, an artist known for authenticity which is why these pieces are played on original instruments.

The range of sound available from this excellently restored and maintained composite is frankly extraordinary, at times almost bewildering. Christine Schornsheim [performs] with flawless ensemble and infectious panache…” - BBC Music Magazine
