About

Founded in 1989 at the Prague Academy under the guidance and encouragement of Antonin Kohout and Milan Skampa of the Smetana Quartet, the Skampa Quartet has since established itself on the international chamber music circuit.

The Quartet made its debut in February 1993 at Wigmore Hall, an appearance which won them the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for the best debut of that year. William Lyne, the Director of Wigmore Hall, commented on that memorable concert thus: “After their first concert in 1993 one sensed their tremendous rapport with the audience”. So much so, that a year later Wigmore Hall appointed the Skampa Quartet as its first artists-in-residence, a highly successful collaboration which lasted five years.

Their recording of Janácek quartets Nos 1 & 2 for Supraphon received rave reviews, and their 2003 recording of the Smetana string quartets for Supraphon provoked The Times to comment that “the disc contains the most idiomatic, fully alive performances of these two pieces these ears have ever heard.”
