About

Klaus Tennstedt recorded Mahler's Symphony No.7 for EMI in the studio two months after this searing Edinburgh Festival account. A second version was issued by EMI which was live from 1993 in the Royal Festival Hall, a time when Tennstedt was becoming a very sick man - he retired from the concert platform in 1994. The recording is no longer available.

The Edinburgh account recorded in August 1980 demonstrates the extraordinary intensity that Tennstedt created when conducting live and which was never present in the confines of the studio. Here he takes risks and creates a tremendous tension. This account of Mahler's Symphony No.7 is at an early period in Tennstedt's relationship with the LPO when his extraordinary Mahler performances were the talk of musicians, critics and audiences throughout the UK and US.

The sound is excellent stereo and has been remastered by Tony Faulkner.

The Mozart Symphony No.41 "Jupiter” from the 1985 Proms is a new addition to the Tennstedt discography. It is the work which preceded the Beethoven Symphony No.9 performance on BBCL 4131-2. This is a big scale performance and shows Tennstedt's ability in repertoire which was unfamiliar to him.
