About

Michael Haydn (1737-1806), Joseph's younger brother, enjoyed a strong reputation as a composer at the end of the 18th century. During his time at the Salzburg court he composed chamber works of the greatest originality, among them the Serenade in D major.
This Serenade, composed in 1764, comprises nine movements and also houses two Concertinos, one for clarinet and one for trombone. Whereas the first movements are string-dominated and demonstrate the virtuosity of the orchestra and bassoon, the 5th and 6th enchant the listener with a wonderful arioso melody and allow the clarinet to appear in the role of a singer or narrator. Dieter Klöcker emerges as virtuoso instrumentalist in the cadenza. In the 6th movement the listener will also be surprised to hear an ascending motif familiar from Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik of 23 years later, where it forms the theme of the fourth movement.
Dieter Klöcker, who has unearthed this musical treasure from the archives contributes his own comments on the Clarinet Concertino in the accompanying booklet.
