About

Dame Myra Hess (1890-1965) was a pianist with a commanding yet unobtrusive technique who specialised in Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. She made her debut in 1907 with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.4 under Sir Thomas Beecham at London's Queen's Hall which brought her instant international recognition. Her concerts at London's National Gallery during the World War II blitz were one of the inspirational images of the time and made her a national heroine. She was made a DBE in 1941. Hess enjoyed a major US career in addition to her fame in the UK with concerts under such conductors as Toscanini, De Sabata and Bruno Walter. Her recording of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" was equivalent to a top ten pop recording today.

This disc is a good representation of Hess's core repertoire - Bach, Haydn and Schumann. The Haydn Piano Sonata No.62 in E flat from 1962 was Hess's last recording. The sound is of good quality for the time and is the last of the Hess recordings held in the BBC's main archive with the exception of a Brahms Quintet with the Griller Quartet from 1942 (in poor sound).
