About

'Sleep, Holy Babe' is a collection of Christmas lullabies which reflect the old traditions and restful, contemplative nature of the nativity story. Some works date back as far as the sixteenth century, such as Richard Pygott’s Quid petis, O Fili? from a collection owned by Henry VIII. Others are freshly composed, and many, such as Gerald Finzi’s A Lullaby, are recorded here for the first time.

Established in 2003, Blossom Street is a professional vocal ensemble comprising singers in their twenties, and performs nationwide and beyond. Hilary Campbell, their founder and director, is a freelance musician and is the Musical Director of Harpenden Music Makers, National Magazinesʼ Choir and the Music Makers of London.

This programme goes beyond the more usual Christmas carol repertoire while keeping the traditions and atmosphere of the season intact. Blossom Street is a popular and ambitious young vocal ensemble, and their flexibility of style is ideal for a selection from the new Shorter House published collection which ranges from the ancient to the brand new. This fine recording will be a first choice for originality this Christmas.
