About

From the 14th to the 17th centuries, the Renaissance affected all aspects of cultural and intellectual life. Fundamentally a ‘rebirth’ of learning stimulated by newly-discovered ancient Greek and Roman texts, it influenced every area of the arts and human achievement, spreading from its origins in Florence to the whole of Europe, aided by the new invention of printing.

Both religious understanding and scientific method also changed as a result, with a move away from Latin to vernacular languages, and Man rather than God taking a central place in the new intellectual world. Increasing national and individual wealth resulting from the expansion of trade made possible the patronage of artists, architects, musicians and scholars, and canny leaders such as Lorenzo de’ Medici (1449–1492) of Florence saw that huge prestige could be gained his way.
