About

Frantisek Tůma was born in Kostelec in 1704 and, having moved to Vienna in 1722, studied composition under Johann Joseph Fux. The most striking thing about his music is the great range of styles that the composer adopts, particularly his use of counterpoint which seems to stem from his time as Fux’s pupil.

Although Tůma may not be among the greatest composers of the eighteenth century, there is in his music the exotic atmosphere typical of moments of historical transition where we encounter reminiscenses of a now waning (baroque) culture, alongside signs of a new sensibility. It is because it is so difficult to place Tůma’s music within a stylistic framework that the music appears so fresh and appealing.

The pieces performed here, which include Sonatas, Sinfonias and Partitas for three and four instruments, represent a fascinating cross-section of this little known composer’s musical output.

When as a vocal group Concerto Italiano recorded Monteverdi’s fourth book of madrigals for Opus 111 in 1994, it became the first Italian Baroque ensemble to receive a Gramophone Award. Its evolvement into an orchestral ensemble followed in 1995. In 1998 the group won another Gramophone Award for a recording of madrigals from Monteverdi’s Book 8, and in 2002 Concerto Italiano received its third Gramophone Award for a CD of Marenzio madrigals.

Rinaldo Alessandrini
is admired for his original and expressive approach to seventeenth and eighteenth century repertoire and, as musical director of Concerto Italiano, he has won all the major international awards.
