About

Sir Colin Davis' new recording of Mozart's Requiem will be his first recording of the composer's music on LSO Live yet his association with Mozart's music stretches back more than 50 years. He has conducted countless acclaimed performances of the composer's operas, orchestral and choral works and can remains one of Mozart's greatest exponents.

Sir Colin brings a lifetime of experience and reverence to this performance of the Requiem, a work left incomplete at the composer's death. Anyone who heard the performances in London or New York in 2007 will know why we are so excited about this recording.

Also available as SACD: LSO0627

Concert reviews:

"There is an intangible connection that occurs sometimes between the members of an orchestra and a particular conductor. That chemistry exists between the musicians of the LSO and Colin Davis. This association increasingly seems a legendary pairing, along the lines of Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Davis conveyed steadiness and solemnity to chilling effect. The slurring figures in the violins that accent the off beats were like sneaky little jabs in your gut. The soloists seemed as inspired by Davis's urgent conducting as the formidable chorus was." - New York Times

"Davis' approach to the Requiem ... contained both tragic grandeur and high drama, with the Dies Irae pointing the way towards the theatrical vividness of some 19th-century settings, but nothing was remotely sentimental of self-pitying." - The Guardian

"the Requiem had all the spirituality it must. But Sir Colin never forced the issue. The music simply breathed as itself. We had a fine quartet of solo singers ... And the London Symphony Chorus performed with the professionalism for which it has long been known ... the Sanctus never sounded more joltingly glorious. When Colin Davis is on the podium, performing Mozart, I don't hear conducting. I hear Mozart" - New York Sun
